Nevertheless She Persists: Honoring Women

In March the Library highlighted Women’s History Month with an exhibit and two guest speakers. UCO Prof. of Political Science Dr. Youngtae Shin presented, “Women’s War,” a comparative study of women’s political activism in the West and East during the early to mid-twentieth century. In her presentation Dr. Shin argued that Western ideas of liberty and women’s suffrage cannot be properly applied to understand the women’s movements in Asia, particularly in Korea and Japan. She discussed non-Western perspectives, which are too often overlooked, or even completely ignored, by Western-dominated global communities.

Following Dr. Shin was Mickayla Fisher, Manager of UCO’s Women’s Research, and BGLTQ+ Student Center, who presented “Red State Resistance: A Discussion of Reproductive Justice.” Fisher shared a documentary projects she produced that shed light on topics that are also often disregarded: sexual conduct, reproductive rights and women’s health issues.

Also on display was the artwork of several UCO female artists: three staff members and three student workers, as well as a powerful image by award-winning Creek/Cherokee artist Joan Hill.
