Ruby Canton

Ruby Canton was appointed librarian of Central State Normal School in 1908 by Governor Charles Haskell and served as librarian for nineteen years until her death in 1927. In addition to her role as librarian, Ruby served as Dean of Women, taught a course in Library Economy, oversaw the library’s move to new expanded quarters in Evans Hall, and published a book titled Teachers’ Helps and a Guide in Selecting a Library. Canton was a member of the American Association of University Women and the American Library Association and served as President of the Librarians’ Division of the Oklahoma Education Association.

She was also beloved by the students of Central. The Bronze Book of 1923 was dedicated to Miss Ruby Canton “…who has stimulated our interest in all phases of class activity, who has been our constant advisor, who has enriched our college experience by contact with her pleasing personality.”
