How We Got Here: Fear, Identity and the Shaping of American Extremism

Books

October 2025

This extensive collection, spanning the years 1938 to 1998, was donated by Dr. John George, retired Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). It is one of the region’s largest and most diverse collections on political extremism, rivaled only by the Wilcox Collection at the Kenneth Spencer Library (University of Kansas) and the Political Ephemera Collection in the Manuscripts Department at Tulane University.

The John George Collection includes an extensive library of over 600 volumes, 235 serial titles—many of them rare—and approximately four linear feet of vertical files. The collection documents both right-wing and left-wing extremist groups.

Right-wing materials include publications and newsletters from Conservative, Patriotic, Anti Communist, Libertarian, Pro-Family, Anti-Abortion, White Nationalist, Gun Rights, and Free Market organizations, among others. Left-wing materials, though less extensive, represent the ideologies and activities of Liberal, Socialist, Radical, Revolutionary, Feminist, LGBTQ+, Marxist, Anti-War, Environmentalist, and Minority Nationalist movements.

Together, these materials offer a vital resource for understanding the diverse and often contentious political landscape of the United States throughout the 20th century. In today’s climate of political turmoil, the visibility of extremist groups in the media has become commonplace. However, the United States has a long and complex history of active extremist organizations. Some of these groups have perpetuated hate and violence against marginalized communities, while others have used controversial tactics in pursuit of justice and self-defense against systemic oppression.
