Metadata Justice in Oklahoma Libraries & Archives Symposium

Code of Conduct

Last updated: October 3, 2024

The goal of this code of conduct is to outline unacceptable behaviors and accountability measures in order to foster a safe learning environment for all participants (attendees, speakers, and organizers) of the Metadata Justice in Oklahoma Libraries & Archives (MJOKLA) Symposium.

By participating in the MJOKLA symposium, we assume participants have introductory knowledge of social justice concepts and we encourage self-education. We acknowledge that violations of the code of conduct may be unintentional. However, the Planning Team will consider the impact of each violation.

Unacceptable Behaviors

  1. Harassing participants on the basis of gender, gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, age, socioeconomic status, background, native language, or any other dimension of diversity.
  2. Using derogatory, insensitive, offensive, harmful, or provoking language (including “jokes”) and/or images, except for the context of examples within a presentation.
  3. Threatening violence through language and/or images.
  4. Communicating with participants after requests to stop.
  5. Disrupting the event during presentations, Q&A, or chat, e.g., taking the chat off-topic to the presentation being made.
  6. Recording or screencasting presentations.
  7. Advocating for or encouraging unacceptable behavior.
  8. Disregarding organizers’ requests to stop unacceptable behaviors.

Reporting Procedures

To report a code of conduct violation, please use the MJOKLA Code of Conduct Reporting Form. This form is automatically sent to the Planning Team. If you are more comfortable speaking with someone, you may contact Shay Beezley at 405-974-2918 or whomever is assigned each year. If any of the members of the Planning Team are involved in the report or are perceived to have a conflict of interest, they will recuse themselves from the process.

Consequences

Participants asked to stop unacceptable behavior are expected to comply immediately. Depending on the severity of the violation, consequences for noncompliance include, but are not limited to:

  1. Warning to stop the unacceptable behavior
  2. Expulsion from the event
  3. Termination of presentation
  4. Prohibition of the participant in question from attending future MJOKLA events (either indefinitely or for a certain time period)
  5. Prohibition of the participant in question from presenting at future MJOKLA events
  6. Prohibition of the participant in question from volunteering for future MJOKLA events (either indefinitely or for a certain time period)
  7. Referral of criminal behavior to proper authorities
