History Capstone Seminar - Fall 2024


Project Description

This guide showcases research by undergraduate seniors enrolled in Dr. Patti Loughlin's History Capstone Seminar during fall 2024. Students selected from 4 collections (listed below) to conduct archival research, identifying interesting information and artifacts for further research, writing biographies and short histories, and assisting with metadata creation for Chambers Library Archives & Special Collections.

Thank you to the UCO Department of History & Geography, Dr. Loughlin, and student researchers Cait Clymer, Jairo Hernandez, Hunter Knight, Joshua LaFortune, Marc Richards, Nathan Watkins, and Kai Wyskup for spending their semester with us in Room 215 at Max Chambers Library.

Archives Goals:
Identify subjects, themes, and research questions within the boxes chosen from the collection; identify exemplary documents to digitize within each folder; document preservation issues; digitize documents useful for your research article

Student Product:
Improved inventory; research journal; article/blog post about area of interest (ex. legalities and politics of dam building and inundation)

Archives Goals:
Briefly research each publication to add theme/category (white nationalist, christian right, black power, communist, gay rights, etc.); research and document which publications (and specific issues) are currently digitized online, and which are available elsewhere using WorldCat.org

Student Product:
Improved inventory; research journal; article/blog post about area of interest


Charles Simmons and Native American Newspaper Collections

Archives Goals:
Identify publications specific to Oklahoma; research and document which publications (and specific issues) are currently digitized online, and which are available elsewhere using WorldCat.org

Student Product:
Improved inventory; research journal; article/blog post about area of interest from local papers (ex. Black Chronicle, Black Advocate, Camp Crier of the Oklahoma City Native American Center)

Archives Goals:
Help draw out diverse histories that more fully reflect our student body. Use the Vista and Bronze Book digital collection, Vista photo negatives, prior staff research, oral histories, and additional resources to create a subject file for future researchers.

Write a history of the evolution of this department and/or group. Publish an article detailing campus legacies of:

  • AAPI Heritage (Asian American and Pacific Islander) people, groups, and initiatives
  • AAUW, NOW, WRA and women’s groups on campus (American Association of University Women, National Organization for Women, Women’s Recreation Association)
  • Home Ec and Les Chefettes
  • Indigenous Student Clubs
  • International Exchange and International Student Programs
  • Latino Heritage
  • SAFE and LGBTQ on-campus activities and groups

Subject file; research journal; historical research article
