Arlington: Field of Honor (A National Geographic Production)

Review

Most people know Arlington National Cemetery as the place where President John F. Kennedy is buried. Or perhaps as the location of the Tomb of the Unknowns, aka Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. National Geographic takes the viewer for an inside look at the military's most famous official resting place.

In one hour, you, the viewer, learn the history of the cemetery. You learn how it came to be located where it is and just how humble its origins really are. You learn how exacting are the requirements to dress and guard the Tomb of the Unknowns, as well as the pride and solemnity that comes with that duty. You learn why JFK came to be buried exactly where he is buried, and why his funeral procession was conducted the way it was. And you learn that six funerals a day is a lot...but not uncommon...for this most unusual and impressive among cemeteries.

Yes, it IS a documentary about a cemetery. And no, the military is not particularly known among the masses for its great hijinks and high humor. But despite its solemnity, this is not a depressing documentary and although very moving, it isn't designed to make the viewer cry. It is very easy to watch. For history and military buffs alike, I highly recommend it. ~ Jana Atkins
