Flying High with A Frank Steward: More Air Travel Tales from the Flight Crew

James Wysong

Review

I discovered James Wysong’s columns (aka A. Frank Steward) when I began traveling frequently more than 10 years ago. Always candid and always full of humor, Wysong’s writing takes a practical approach to air travel, interspersed with cautionary tales and humorous stories of air travel mishaps and mayhem. Although focused on air travel, his book deals with the many frustrations of travel in the air and on the ground: how to survive flying during the holidays or an airline strike, dealing with TSA and Customs, and the art of complaining.

A lot of the advice is the same tried-and-true advice you find in travel columns and commentary from any news outlet. But here it’s a lot more entertaining. At the end of chapter 2, he states:

A couple of readers complained that I refer to air travel as a joke when it should be considered serious business. While I don’t want to be sitting next to these readers on a long flight, I do appreciate their opinion. In fact, I do think of air travel as a joke, the same way I look on all of life as a humorous journey. ~ Jana Atkins
