Under the Mesquite

Guadalupe Garcia McCall

Review

"Under the Mesquite" is on the 2014 Sequoyah Intermediate Masterlist and the winner of the 2012 Pura Belpre' Award and was chosen as a finalist for the William C. Morris Debut award.  It is rated for grades 7 and up.  Another fictionalized account of the author's own life written in verse-like style.

The story follows the protagonist, Lupita, during her high school years.  She is the oldest child and must take on more responsibilities as her mother is diagnosed with cancer.  It is an honest look at an extended illness and the effects it can have on the caregivers and the family.  The story goes back and forth from Lupita's family home in Mexico to their current home in Texas.  From a time before her mother was ill to the current.  It is a warm story of love, courage, and strong family connections.

Definitely recommended reading! ~ Anita Hill
