Trois Couleurs: Bleu

Review

In this, the first of three movies of the Trois Couleurs (Three Colors) trilogy, director Krzysztof Kieslowski examines the concept of liberty through the eyes of the main character, Julie. Julie has just lost her husband and young daughter in a car accident and the viewer follows her on a dark journey of loss to salvation. She first tries to survive by making a new life for herself, but the past never goes away, and this turns out to be what she needs.

This film is tragic and morose, and starts off a little slow. However, stick with the film to find a beautiful and intelligent work. It is perfect for an introduction to foreign cinema. ~ Dana Jackson
