  • Born July 24, 1849 in Lykens Dauphin, Pennsylvania
  • Married Jennie MacKamon in 1875. They had three children
  • Died September 30, 1921 at his home in Chicago, Illinois

  • Schooled in Pennsylvania
  • Graduated from Pennsylvania State Normal School and Mount Union College

  • 1893 Faculty member of then Territorial Normal School of Oklahoma under President Winans during the 1893-1894 school year Umholtz retired from the faculty of Territorial Normal School Superintendent of Schools in Kansas
  • 1894 - 1896 Superintendent of Oklahoma County Schools
  • 1896 - 1900 Professor of English at Territorial Normal School of Oklahoma
  • 1901 - 1906 Appointed to the Presidency of Territorial Normal School of Oklahoma by close friend, Territorial Superintendent L.W. Baxter. Elected to the Presidency of Territorial Normal School on July 11, 1901. Resigned as President of then Central State Normal School in 1906
  • 1907 Government Supervisor of Indian Schools for the Chickasaw Nation, Oklahoma
  • 1912 Author of Primary Number Book (Lyons & Carnahan)
  • 1913 Co-author of Modern Arithmetic, Elementary (Lyons & Carnahan)

Awards and Affiliations

  • Author of the first bill for the organization of Oklahoma's school system which became the first school law
  • He authored a series of arithmetic textbooks that were adopted as supplementary books by the state textbook commission of Oklahoma
  • 1889 Member of the 89er Association of Oklahoma, staking a claim in north Oklahoma City beginning about 36th Street
