Herland Voice Newsletter Archive
Herland Sister Resources has been serving the women's community since 1983. They provide resources to strengthen, enrich, and support women, and to promote a world free of prejudice, oppression and exploitation.
The Herland project began in August 2016. Dr. Lindsey Churchill negotiated the donation with the Herland Sister Resources often referred to just as Herland. Herland is a womanist organization with a strong lesbian focus. However, Herland is not restricted to just lesbians. Everyone is welcome at Herland, 2312 W I 44 Service Rd, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Herland is a nonprofit organization operated entirely by volunteers. They publish a monthly newsletter and host a wide array of social and educational activities and services.
It was agreed UCO Chambers Library would acquire the Herland Library as well as any archival materials they may have about the organization. The Herland Library was designated to go to the Center which is the name for the combination of the Women’s Research Center and BGLTQ+ Student Center. This innovative and interdisciplinary program supports the Gender and Sexuality Studies minor. It serves as a site of information, research and advocacy for issues regarding women at UCO as well as the larger metropolitan community. The Center also provides resources for the BGLTQ+ community, a crucial community-meeting place, and academic programming. Most of the books from this collection are not found in any library in Oklahoma. The Gender and Sexuality Studies Library is housed in Thatcher Hall, room 106.
The actual transfer of the materials occurred on August 25, 2016. Churchill rented a van to facilitate the move, which took one day with help from Library staff and student workers. The materials were housed in the Library basement during processing, before they were moved to the Center on August 7, 2017.
