Guest logins
If you aren't faculty, staff, or a student at UCO, you can get a guest login for our wireless network. Go to the first-floor Reference Desk or the IT Help Desk (or Circulation Desk from 11pm to 2am), show a photo ID, and we can set up a guest account with a login name and password for you. Login to the UCO wireless network and you'll have access for 24 hours. The login is good anywhere on campus. The IP address may need to be renewed in order for the computer to work in another building - see instructions below.
Current faculty, staff, and students must use their own credentials rather than getting a guest pass. Faculty and staff use their domain credentials (what they use to login to their office computers) while students use their UCONNECT credentials.
Releasing the IP Address
Sometimes when you go from one building to another on campus, a laptop will keep the settings from the other building and
that prevents it from connecting to the wireless in the next building.
To fix this, follow these directions:
In the lower right part of your screen look for an icon that says "Wireless Network Connection." Right-click on it and choose "Repair" from the list of options. After it runs, try connecting to the wireless network again.
If you don't see the wireless icon in the lower right part of your screen, follow these steps:
1. Click on Start, then Run
2. Type cmd in the box, then OK
3. Type ipconfig /release in the window, then hit Enter
4. Type ipconfig /renew in the window, then hit Enter
The computer should be able to detect the network. If not, try this:
1. Click on Start, then Control Panel, then Network Connections
2. Click on Local Area Connections
3. Under the General tab, click on Properties
4. Under the General tab, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
5. Under the General tab, click on Obtain an IP Address Automatically, then click OK
Try again to see if the computer can detect the network. If not, contact campus IT at 974-2255.
Connecting to the Network Using a Mac
1. At the "Apple menu", select "System Preferences" Select "Network." Verify that "Show": is set to "AirPort."
2. Select the "TCP/IP" tab. The settings should appear as follows: Configure: Using DHCP. Leave all else blank.
3. Click "Save."
4. Under "System Preferences", select "Quit System Preferences." Launch your browser.
Error Message: Unmanaged Switch
If you get this error while trying to connect to the wireless network on campus, open a Command Prompt ( usually Start > Run > type cmd > OK )
and type the following into the command line:
ipconfig /flushdns (then hit "Enter")
ipconfig /renew (then hit "Enter")
exit (then hit "Enter")
Yes, using our wi-fi is free. Printing costs the same as from other computers in the library.
What is a wi-fi hotspot?
A wi-fi hotspot is any place where you can get a wireless signal. You should be able to go anywhere in the library and get a wi-fi signal.
May I use my own computer and connect to the library wi-fi?
Your laptop computer will need a wireless card in order to connect with our wi-fi. If it is properly configured, your laptop should automatically recognize the wireless network and connect with it. The library cannot guarantee that your equipment will work with our network. You can also check out a laptop at the Circulation Desk - they are configured to access the wi-fi. Once connected to the network, we recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Netscape Navigator as your browser.
Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect to Wi-Fi?
If you are using your own laptop or wireless device with a wireless network card, no special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required. Our network supports 802.11b/g & 802.11g only. When using one of the library laptops from the Circulation Desk, you will need to login using the appropriate username which is provided to you at the time you checkout a laptop.
Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
When connecting to the Internet you are agreeing to abide by University of Central Oklahoma Computer and Network Usage Policy which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Internet. In addition, users of library laptops are financially responsible for any laptop loss or damage. Late fees also apply to library laptops if returned after the time they are due.
Can I print while using wireless?
Yes, but you cannot print directly to our printers. Save your files to a storage media such as a flash drive, then go to the Express Print Station computer by the other printers in the reference area (ask at the help desk if you can't find it). You may also email files to your email account, then login to any library computer and send print jobs to a printer.
Can the library help me configure my computer?
Sorry, everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.
