:: Collection Usage Policies

The library encourages and promotes use of its collections. The materials in the Archives and Special Collection do not circulate. They are available to students, faculty, scholars, and the public for consultation and research in the reading room of the department's facilities. Computer catalogs and databases, various guides and finding aids are available for reference.

  • Personally owned computers may be used if their operation is quiet.
  • Use of items such as tape recorders, scanners, or cameras must be approved by staff.
  • No food or drinks are permitted.
  • A black-and-white photocopying machine is available for researchers' use in copying materials from manuscript collections. However, there are copying restrictions on bound and fragile materials.
  • Researchers needing photographs or digital scans should consult staff about our photographic services.
  • Photographic reproductions of materials in manuscript collections are for personal research only and are not to be further reproduced or placed in another repository without prior written permission from the Archives and Special Collections staff.
  • Due to the often rare and fragile nature of materials in the collection no children under the age of 12 will be allowed to remain in the Archives. All children age 12 to 17 must be supervised by an adult.
